Lifestyle
Sierra County is a land of wide open spaces and beautiful scenery that varies from desert to grasslands to mountainous regions. Elevations range from approximately 4400' in Elephant Butte and Truth or Consequences to more than 6000' in Kingston. Portions of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Area and the Gila National Forest are within our boundaries, making Sierra County an ideal place to experience nature. Elephant Butte Lake is the largest body of water in the state and a second lake, Caballo, is located south of T or C. Three State Parks are available for year-round camping, birding, hiking, and more.
Our County Seat, Truth or Consequences, is located 148 miles due south of Albuquerque, NM, and 119 miles north of El Paso, TX. Truth or Consequences was called Hot Springs until 1950. Ten hot spring spas are open for business downtown.
In addition to the municipalities of Truth or Consequences, Elephant Butte, and Williamsburg, several historic and picturesque small towns are located around the county, many of which are accessed via the highways that make up the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway. Museums and small businesses are scattered around the county — see complete lists of businesses and museums on the County Tourism site.
Two Chambers serve area businesses: Truth or Consequences / Sierra County Chamber of Commerce, and the Elephant Butte Chamber of Commerce. An active Mainstreet program hosts events and works to beautify “T or C,” as it's called by locals.
